the janitor

he said when he got to the employee lounge

there was a whole cup of coffee spilled

the cup left shattered on the floor

and he was pissed.

nobody had bothered to clean it up.

so he got out his mop

and asked someone what had happened,

why it had been left.

they told him

an engineer, a friend of his,

had had a heart attack

just as he was taking his coffee out of the microwave

and he dropped the cup

before he fell.

the ambulance was only six blocks away

five minutes at the most

but it took them twelve minutes to get there.

he was lying on the floor gasping for air,

he turned blue and died

in nine minutes.

he was only 42 years old

and his friends watched him die

and he should have had a chance.

they should have gotten there in time.

someone should have helped him.

the coffee and the broken cup

were left there

on the floor.

nobody thought about it.

nobody remembered.

"and i came in at 4:00",

he said, "and cleaned it up

and when they told me what had happened

i went back to that spot

and sat there

and cried."
